The Pizza Rant

Ok, Ok you probably have never heard of the Pizza Rant. I should really call it Carolin’s Rant. I normally start off my blog by telling you what wonderful food I am going to write about and the history, I have with that food. Well not today, I have to vent. So I have decided to vent on my blog site. Now I probably have you pretty curious by now.

Well I am going to tell you what happened to me last night. I have mentioned before that my husband and I have a date night once a week. At least we hope it is once a week. As it turned out we were able to go out last night. I suggested this particular restaurant, which we went to. Now I ordered a personal pizza, which was to have Rock Shrimp, garlic, red onions, capers and fontina cheese. Sounds good hey. I thought hey lets try this and then I can write about it on my blog. I liked the sounds of it as soon as I saw it. I love rock shrimp. If you see one alive, it actually looks closer to a miniature lobster than a shrimp. It has a very hard shell unlike a typical shrimp. It also taste more like lobster meat than shrimp. Then the garlic and onions, I really don’t need to say much about these 2 ingredients except yummy. Then the capers would add a nice little tang. The last ingredient was the fontina cheese. First of all I liked that it had Fontina cheese instead of mozzarella because I am not a mozzarella fan. But Fontina cheese is quite mild. So it would need the punch from the garlic and the sweetness from the onions and of course that lovely almost lobster flavor from the Rock shrimp. Oh I forgot one thing, I believe they used olive oil instead of a tomato sauce. So do I have you salivating yet? Well stop right there. So my pizza is served to me. I first of all notice there is no garlic aroma. Then I look down and I see little tiny shrimp. You know the type you buy at the grocery store that are precooked and you might use them in a dip or salad or something. Can you tell I am not a fan of these? For one thing they have no flavor, because whoever cooked them added nothing to them. I know they are easy and convenient, but really how long does it take to cook a shrimp. So back to my pizza. So I am a little unhappy about this, but I am so hungry by this point. So I bite into it. Oh what a shock there is hardly any flavor, except for the very few capers they put on top. So the maitre de comes over and happens to say, “How is everything” I say, “Well I am a little disappointed with the pizza”. I said it was suppose to have rock shrimp on it, not baby shrimp. He said “oh”. I said, “Those are not rock shrimp”. He politely excuses himself and says, “I will talk to the kitchen”

He never did come back. Our waiter came back with the dessert menu and said because of their mistake we could have a free dessert.

Now do you think I have vented enough. Not yet. I think why I was so mad was that if you are going to advertise something then you should have it. If you don’t then tell the customer.

I think this pizza could be a really good pizza. I am going to give you my version, without me making it first. Because to me it is a no brainer. It has all the right ingredients; it is just how we are going to prepare it. So lets call it:

The Ranting Rock Shrimp Pizza

1 pizza shell (around 10”)
Olive oil
Approximately 10 rock shrimp cut up (if you can’t get rock shrimp you could use a medium size shrimp)
½ small red onion sliced
2-3 garlic cloves chopped
2-3 tbsp capers
Fontina cheese

I would first of all sauté the onions until quite soft. Then add the garlic and rock shrimp or shrimp. Cook until rock shrimp is done (the meat real turn opaque in color).

Spread some olive oil on the pizza shell. Spread over the rock shrimp mixture. Then sprinkle the cheese over the mixture. Finally sprinkle your capers on top.

Bake at 400°F for about 15 minutes. Check it if the cheese is melted then it is done. You don’t want to over cook this. Because you will have very rubbery rock shrimp.

Pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy, I know I will.

TIP OF THE DAY
Never bring home left over seafood dishes from a restaurant. There is too big of a chance of you getting food poisoning. You do not know how long it sat out before you got it and then it sat while you were eating it and then on the way home. Trust me on this. My husband and I spent Christmas Eve one year at the hospital because
