Garlic Bread With A Secret Ingredient

Published by Carolin on Tagged Appetizer, Side Dish, Vegetarian, snack

Why buy it prepared when you can make it and it only takes 5 minutes or so. Today I have a craving for garlic bread. I so enjoy good garlic bread. It isn’t something I eat all the time but when I do I just love it. I just love having a piece of garlic bread that is crispy on the outside and nice and soft in the inside. Biting into it and tasting that wonderful butter and garlic flavor. Oh man I am getting hungry. Two of my favorite foods garlic and butter. Can’t you just taste and smell it now.

Now here is my issue with garlic bread. Actually it is not an issue with garlic bread. It is an issue with prepared garlic bread. I don’t get it. It very rarely taste that great. Plus I am never sure if they have used butter or a mixture of butter and margarine (which I hate). Please do not write me saying the goodness of margarine. Anyone who knows me knows I hate margarine and I am not using it. There is my little rant for the day. Anyways back to store bought garlic bread. Then there is the bread they use. Half the time it is just like fluff.

When I have garlic bread I want flavor and I want substance. I don’t want fluff. The way I look at it. You go to the store and buy your bread. I prefer sour dough. Remember I said I like substance. Then nine out of ten times you have the rest of the ingredients at home. You have to bake it for the same amount of time. So why not prepare it yourself. I’ll bet you that you won’t go back to store bought.

Now I already mentioned the garlic and butter, while I us a few more ingredients in my garlic bread. But the one secret ingredient I use is mayonnaise. I would love to say I came up with this idea myself. But I didn’t. My friend Debra came up with it. So thank-you Deb. The mayonnaise just makes it a bit creamier and the zing from the mayonnaise, just adds more flavor.

Once again I am going to give my measurements but you may like more garlic or less. So make this recipe yours.

Garlic Bread With The Secret Ingredient

1 Loaf of Sour Dough bread
3-4 garlic cloves crushed
½ c butter (I use unsalted)
2-3 tbsp mayonnaise
2tbsp parsley chopped (optional) this really means if you have it on hand
Parmesan Cheese

Preheat oven to 375°F

Slice bread in half-length ways. In a bowl cream together butter, garlic, mayonnaise and parsley.

Spread onto bread both sides. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Put bread back together. Wrap in foil and bake for about 25 minutes.
Now at this point it is up to you what to do. You can slice it and serve it like this. Or you can take the two pieces apart and place under the broiler for a few minutes to brown a bit. I like it either way.

You can serve this with just about any meal. I have been known to sit down with girlfriends and just have garlic bread and a glass of wine or so. Hey what are friends for?

Enjoy

TIP OF THE DAY
Do not keep your garlic in the fridge. It just ruins it. I simply keep mine on the counter.
