Kids Cooking For The Holidays

Published by Carolin on Tagged Vegetarian, dips

It is getting closer and closer to the holiday season. I wrote last week about how we like to cook and eat lots during this season and I think it is just part of the celebration. I don’t think it matters what religion you are or what culture you come from if there is a holiday to celebrate than you cook lots and eat lots. I find in a lot of cultures there are a lot of dips served. The one thing that is great about dips they are not just for the adult crowd. Kids love dips and kids love to cook dips. It is a great way to get your kids into cooking. It is also a great way of spending time with your kids. This season to me is all about family. I want my kids close and I want them involved. Now both my kids are really involved in cooking with me. I think I got them involved usually out of desperation and then figured out what a great way to have some quality time with them. Plus they get to learn the basics of cooking.

Kids seem to be able to spot a dip a mile away. Now most kids are exposed to the creamier dips. The ones that have a mayonnaise or cream cheese base. This is great but it doesn’t just have to be those types. Kids for the most part like garlic and there are so many dip recipes out there that are not a creamy base instead they are bean or vegetable base. Now one of my favorite dips is a Homus, which is a Greek dip with a chickpea base. If you haven’t tried this on your kids, do. They love it. It is so easy to make and you can get you kids to help. Not to mention that it is very healthy.

The recipe I am going to share with you I have made for probably 20 years. Most of the ingredients you’ll have on hand a few you will have to pick up. So pick up extra so you can keep making this over the holiday season.

Homus

1 19oz Chick Peas
2 Tbsp Tahini Paste
4 cloves garlic chopped
4 Tbsp Fresh lemon juice
4 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 tsp coriander seeds crushed
½ tsp salt
½ tsp cumin
1/4c chopped parsley

Place all ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth.

Serve with pita bread. Or what I do is I use Naam bread and I brush a little olive oil on it and heat it in a 375°F oven for about 7 minutes. Then I slice it into wedges and serve with the Homus.

How easy is that, now you can get you kids cooking for the holidays.

TIP OF THE DAY

If you are like me and you love lemon and are able to get a good quality lemon flavored olive oil. Use this instead of the extra virgin olive oil, but still use the fresh lemon juice. It is amazing.
